So I’ve finally decided that the time is ripe to become fit.

I’ve been at almost exactly the same (unhealthy) weight for 2 years. (I’m not huge, but let’s just say I’m tired of having these.) In various fits and starts I’ve tried jogging, using our apartment complex’s gym, going to an actual gym, and so forth. I’ve never really decided to put the effort and energy into becoming fit before — there’ve always been glitches in my exercise plan du jour. I moved far away from the gym I was a member at, I was working 80 hours a week, our apartment gym is only open 9-5 (laaaame), and jogging only works if I get home early enough from work to meet up, run, shower, then get on with whatever the evening holds. Too often kinks come up which mean any of those things Just Don’t Work for the regularity that I know I need to throw at this.

Last week I decided to launch into a full-on version of the No S diet — basically, ‘enforced reasonableness’ in what you eat. I was, however, having a hard time being sure that I could get on board with either the Urban Ranger or Shovelglove as far as the exercise component of my plan.

Thank you feed reader and subscrition to Cool Tools. I’d seen some press about a new “game” which guided you through a fitness plan, monitoring your progress, and adjusting for your goals (strenght, weight loss, cardio, fexibility, ...) However, at the time I read it they didn’t even have a release scheduled yet, so I made a mental note to check on it again sometime and promptly forgot about it. Well, it’s called Yourself!Fitness and although I’m just starting with it, I think it’s a perfect match for me.

Based on a quick fitness test, it quickly decided I should concentrate on weight loss. I’m not sure how sophisiticated the tailoring of workouts to ability are, but I felt that my first session with it was exactly hard enough. I really had to push to finish, but could actually do it. I do need more space — our current living room (all going as planned, we’ll have more space in not too long) is a bit shorter than it wants, and sometimes I have a hard time seeing the TV from the angles I need to be at to do an exercise.

Anyway, it’s perfect for what I need. A good workout that I can actually do because it’s there for me whenever I can use it, and it’s at home. I’ve commited (that’s what they call it, inside the program) to doing 30 minutes a day, M-F. (weekends are too unpredictable for us.) I’ll probably write more about it as I progress, this is really just “first impressions” — but it may have been the most life-changing $35 I’ve ever spent.
